Heparin Recall & Dialysis

Baxter Issues Urgent Nationwide Voluntary Recall of Heparin 1,000 Units/ML 10 and 30mL Multi-Dose Vials: Baxter News Release

Heparin has been on a lot of people's minds, lately, especially since the publicity surrounding celebrity Dennis Quaid's newborn twins were given a potentially lethal dose of Heparin in November 2007.

Without a doubt Heparin is also on the minds of dialysis patients, as well. Most of us have undergone Heparin therapy several times a week for years at a time without so much as a thought.

But, I'm just wondering: Do any of you think that Baxter's description of adverse side-effects from the use of Heparin sound pretty much like any typical side-effects from dialysis treatment (regardless of Heparin?)

"stomach pain or discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased or low blood pressure, chest pain, fast heart rate, dizziness, fainting, unresponsiveness, shortness of breath, feeling your heart beat strong or fast, drug ineffectiveness, burning sensation, redness or paleness of skin, abnormal sensation of the skin, mouth or lips, flushing, increased sweating, decreased skin sensitivity, headache, feeling unwell, restlessness, watery eyes, throat swelling, thirst and difficulty opening the mouth..."

Yeah, that's what I thought.

I wonder what most dialysis centers will be using instead of Heparin? I also can't help but wonder if all those years I was on Heparin now put me at risk for some funky problem...

Thanks for the info on Heparin. Gail told the staff at the dialysis center about it, and they were pretty impressed that she had heard of it. Always good for the staff to think you are really paying attention! Luckily, they don't use the Baxter heparin, so it didn't affect her.
We are still waiting for the call from the transplant center!!

FYI - I am PD patient using Baxter Heparin. I started one of the recalled vials on Jan 9 and Jan 11 was admitted to the hospital for 5 days with possible Peritonitis. No culture grew the entire time though I was really ill. Since it has taken several weeks to regain the little strength I had.

I am a bit upset...the hospital bill alone was $17,000

Everyoine is playing dumb..including Baxter.
